4 Stories Every Pitch Needs
Whenever you pitch someone…
Whether it’s your ideas, startup, or beliefs…
There are four stories you need to share…
1. Origin Story
This is who you are, and the “trigger event” that catalyzed you into action.
This event is often a story of loss due to the hero ignoring a chronic, ongoing PROBLEM.
For example… Spiderman ignores an armed robbery. Consequence? Uncle Ben dies.
The origin story is admitting a problem exists… and you’re driven to solve it.
2. Dev Story
The hero will then go on a journey to find “the solution”.
- Travel far and wide to seek out gurus…
- Research and experiment intensively…
- Slog through trial-and-error…
This is the training montage in Rocky. The web of red thread in a detective story. Galahad on his quest for the holy grail.
The purpose of the dev story is twofold:
One, to show your audience the struggle you went through. And two, to knock other solutions in a subtle way.
It tells them: “I’ve done the work… and this is the best solution.” It’s a unique PROMISE… or USP.
3. RBAT Stories
With your newfound (or invented) solution, you are now Prometheus bringing fire to the masses.
If your product works as promised… customers may give you a testimonial (or review). This is PROOF.
But it’s not enough for them to say, “Love this!” or “Amazing product!”.
We want RBATs = Results-Based Anecdotal Testimonials.
We want stories… of how your solution… affected their lives… via quantifiable results.
4. Purpose Story
Finally — you PROPOSE to your audience.
You share the “greater good” your solution will bring to the world.
And why they should try your solution.
